What to Wear to NYC in the Summer

NYC in the summer

I recently traveled to NYC and wanted to share what to wear in New York in the summer. The outfits I packed were perfect for late spring or early summer. My friends and I spent this short time going to Broadway shows and exploring the city. I never felt overdressed, too hot, or too cold.

Feel free to copy these outfits with what you already have in your closet, but of course, I will link or find similar items to make it easy for you if you plan to shop.

Day One: Travel Outfit and A Broadway Show

At the start of any trip, you need a travel outfit. The best travel outfits are stylish and comfortable. You can grab some food and explore in your travel outfit when you get to your destination. If you’re anything like me, when you arrive at your location, you don’t want to do so much after a full day of travel, but you want to do enough to not waste time.

I don’t go to many Broadway shows, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen a show. I spend an embarrassing amount of time trying to decide what to wear. We saw MJ the Musical, and I wanted to be festive for the show, including a red moto jacket or sequins. Initially, it was too hot for the moto jacket, then I decided on sequins, but it was too over the top. I wanted to look put together but not too dressed up because I was sure we would do something chill after the show. I decided on a short suit, but couldn’t find one that would arrive in time, so I decided to make my own with separates.

Day Two: Sight Seeing and A Dinner Cruise

During the day, we explored the city, did a little shopping, and grabbed food. We kept it low-key this day. The outfits I planned were understated and comfortable. Any look would work for this day. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes for all the walking you will be doing. A jacket is always a good idea if you go in and out of stores or restaurants.

That evening we took a dinner cruise on the Hudson River, where we toured the NYC landscape, including the Statue of Liberty (a bucket list for me). I wanted to wear a simple dress with the same sneakers I wore to the MJ Musical to keep things fun. It was a decent walk to the pier, so no uncomfortable feet for me.

Day Three: Another Broadway Show and Sight Seeing

After the dinner cruise, my friends and I hung out very late, so the following day we kept it relaxing and grabbed some food before our next show, Fat Ham. Fat Ham was a matinee show, so I kept it casual. After the show, we grabbed an Uber to a restaurant we were all eager to try. That evening, the temperature dropped, so it was pretty chilly out, and I had to add a sweatshirt to my outfit while we went out to watch the NBA playoffs and grab ice cream.

Day Four: Travel Day

Another travel day outfit for the ride home. I kept it comfortable, it was warm this day, but you never know how cool it will be on the train. Our train was full, so it was a little warm. I was able to come out of my sweatshirt and still be comfortable for the ride home.
